A tough defeat for Whirlwinds today against Mortimer Gems, (their Saturday team that takes players from all of their midweek teams). I genuinely can’t remember the score (yes, really!) but I think it was around the 70-20 mark.
The Whirlwinds that took the court hadn’t all played together before and we had a number of players playing out of position so it was a definite learning curve! C (Ali Haslam) and (WA) Michala Morgan-Jones were absolutely solid and they both deserve a huge amount of credit for keeping the ball moving forward. GS (Laura Ferguson) worked hard to score but there were just too many times when we didn’t get the ball in to her.
Down in defence, the Mortimer team were playing really well and it was hard for us to keep them out of the circle. WD(Sarah Majer) worked hard on the wing throughout the match ( in her first ever competitive match ) and in a really physical game, that was a big ask. GK (Charlotte Morris) moved from defence to attack late in the game and scored some good goals for us. (GA) Emily Ballinger moved from attack to defence and gave loads of support to GK(Tamryn Lawrence) in the circle trying to hold Mortimer.
In short, it’s a ‘hard to read’ scoreline and it doesn’t really reflect how hard the team worked and how we started to come together towards the end. There was good stuff in there and with more team practice, we’ll be able to show a lot more of that off I have no doubt.
Thanks to Kate Courtnadge, Liz Johns and Jade Ballinger for the much-needed sideline support and POM was, rightly, Michala.
Chins up ladies and see you at training xx
